BATTLE OF THE BOMBERS
20 BEST MILITARY INSPIRED BOMBER JACKETS FOR MEN IN 2020
Bomber jackets first appeared during World War I, having been developed for pilots who had to endure exposed, freezing cockpits.
In September 1917, the U.S. Army officially established the Aviation Clothing Board and began producing heavy-duty leather flight jackets.
These early versions featured high wraparound collars, zipper closures with wind flaps, snug cuffs, and waists. Some of these were lined with fur and had fur collars.
The jackets evolved since those early versions and it wasn't until the late 1950s that Bomber jackets began to appear in street fashion.
A cornerstone of fashion for both men and women, bomber jackets so no sign of losing popularity in 2019.
Here is a curated list of 20 bomber jackets for all budgets.
1. Alpha Industries MA1 Bomber Jacket
A former subcontractor for the US Defense Department, Alpha industries was founded back in 1957.
More than 60 years later and the company now makes military-grade apparel for civilians. The brand has launched a new collection for 2019, including our personal favorite, the MA-1 Down Flight Jacket Jacquard.
Filled with down so it's extra-warm, this reversible flight jacket version doubles as a goes-with-everything bomber thanks to the black, quilted lining. The signature "Remove Before Flight" flag pays homage to the originals and it even features the upper nylon tab and snaps (used to secure oxygen masks and headsets).
2. Superdry Hooded Air Corps Bomber Jacket
Superdry are one of our favorite labels for military-inspired fashion, with nice tailoring and cool camo prints. Occasionally, they can go a little overboard with their branding, but not on this classic.
A hybrid bomber and hoodie, the jacket features a main zip fastening, two popper-fastened pockets, one zip fastened pocket on the sleeve and one inside pocket.
This jacket also features a removable hood, ribbed cuffs and hem and a textured Superdry logo on the placket. Finished with a Superdry logo badge on one sleeve and a Superdry logo tab on one pocket.
3. Goodthreads Men's Bomber
At Rockin' Camo, we always try to feature solid alternatives to the more expensive brands. Goodthreads is an Amazon brand but don’t let that put you off. This lightweight bomber jacket is of decent quality for the money.
Made from 100% polyester, it features a satin-finished body with contrast ribbing at collar, cuffs, and hem. Like all good bombers, it features a zip pocket on the left upper arm and slash pockets.
4. Cockpit USA B3 Bomber Jacket
Sheepskin B-3 bomber jackets were introduced in WWII to ensure that crewman were kept warm while flying at high altitudes in unpressurized cabins. If you really want to go for the authentic original flyboy look, while staying extremely warm, it's hard to go past Cockpit USA's range of sheepskin bomber jackets.
Cockpit USA has perfected the long lost leather finish once used and added side entry hand warmer pockets updating this jacket to contemporary standards. Sheepskin varies from production to production but the entire range is well made.
5. Urban Classics Vintage Cotton Bomber
Urban Classics is a brand rooted in the German hip-hop scene and they have more than one quality bomber in their range. The Vintage Camo Cotton Bomber Jacket comes with all the typical bomber details - slightly gathered sleeves, upper arm pocket, side flap pockets, and a small ribbed collar. We particularly like the camo prints and the washed look which gives it a contemporary feel.
6. Tokyo Laundry Filion Quilted Bomber Jacket
An urban take on the classic bomber, the 'Filion' from Tokyo Laundry is almost a hybrid between a hip hop style down jacket and a bomber. The main body has the horizontal quilted design, with fully lined regular sleeves for extra insulation.
The Filion features a ribbed collar, zip fasteners with ribbing on the sleeve cuffs and back hem. The main body features two side-welted pockets with zip closure. This bomber is a good option for those who like its distinct street style and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.
7. G-Star Rackam Flight Teddy Padded Bomber
G-Star's collection of coats and jackets consists of some timeless classics that combine military inspiration with modern innovation.
The Rackam Flight Teddy Padded Bomber is the Dutch streetwear brand's contemporary take on the classic bomber jacket. The Rackam features an easy fit and extra ribbing for comfort and the design is versatile.
8. Canada Goose Fraser Bomber
One of the most premium bombers on this list in quality of workmanship, materials, and price. The Fraser Bomber is the first of its kind for Canada Goose: a reversible version of one the brand's most enduring silhouettes for two functional styles in one.
The exterior is black with a Black Label disc that reverses to a quilted camo print interior with a classic Canada Goose disc. The Fraser is nicely finished with a traditional ribbed collar, cuffs and, waistband that work hard to keep heat sealed in and the elements out. Probably the warmest bomber on this list.
9. Choice Apparel Men's Flight Jacket
A budget alternative to the Alpha Industries, this camo bomber from a wholesale supplier has garnered good reviews and won't break the bank. It is also available in a range of primary colors and some cool camo prints.
It features a thick outer shell with a padded cushion lining, elastic bands that won’t stretch out, two snap button front pockets and one zippered arm pocket.
10. Alpha Industries L-2B Raglan Bomber Jacket
Alpha Industries is prolific in bomber jackets and flight jackets and the reversible L-2B raglan bomber jacket is another to make the list. Almost a hybrid of a college jacket/bomber it features the typical MA-1 utility pocket on sleeve with signature red “Remove Before Flight” tag.
This bomber also features sleeve shirring, contrast fabric detail on raglan sleeves, two exterior welt pockets, two interior welt pockets and the white ringed-knit rib collar, cuffs, and waistband.
